The Transformation of Oita's Industries |
|
 |
The Gross Prefectural
Product of Oita was 4 trillion 400 billion yen (in 1999),
which consisted of 3.1% of primary industries, 36.9%
of secondary industries, and 61.0% of tertiary industries.
The proportion of secondary industry was higher compared
to other prefectures in Kyushu or to the national average.
Establishment of "New Industrial Cities" was
the catalyst in helping the prefecture to shift its
industrial focus from primary to secondary industries.
Steel, petrochemical and chemical plants, as well as
other industries have been launched in the Oita Coastal
Industrial Zone since Oita was designated as the "New
Industrial City" in 1963. Major high-tech enterprises,
such as electric and precision machinery industries,
have been established rapidly since the implementation
of the "Northern Oita and Kunisaki Area Technopolis
Project" in 1984, or the "Oita Area Brain
Location Project". Oita 's industrial structure
has changed from being material-based to being processing
and assembly-based since then. The total value of shipment
in the manufacturing industry in 1980 was 2.1 trillion
yen. The ratio of shipment value by category showed
23.9% steel, 15.4% oil and coal, 13.0% chemical and
only 3.9% electric machines. However, the 1998 shipment
value in the manufacturing industry leaped to 2.83 trillion
yen. At the same time, the ratio occupied by the electric
machine became the highest at 23.7% and those of chemical
( 11.0%) and steel (10.5%) fell. This transition during
the 20 years clearly indicates the change in industrial
structure, from material-based industries to processing/assembly-based
industries. The "Oita Prefectural Accumulation
and Activation Project of High Technology Industry"
(established in 1999), which was a shift from the previous
"Technopolis Project" and "Oita Area
Brain Location Project", has been developed. 111
IC/electronics-related companies have established/plan
to establish new branches in the target areas (6 cities,
13 towns, and 2 villages, such as Oita City, Beppu City,
and Nakatsu City). The concentration of high technology
industries brings advanced industries a step further
in fulfilling their aim to be a part of a "Technologically-advanced
Prefecture" and "Intellectual Prefecture". |

To Create a More Attractive Shopping Street |
|
 |
| As the economic
environment changes in areas such as the increasingly
diversifying needs of consumers, or the development
of the transportation system, the commercial and distribution
industries have also greatly evolved. Remarkable numbers
of large supermarkets and discount shops have opened
in the suburb areas, as well as various convenience
stores in the city area. The largest shopping center
was opened in the suburbs of the prefectural capital
of Oita City in December 2000, and constructions of
similar shopping centers are under way. Old shopping
streets which used to prosper in the urban areas in
the prefecture face seri-ous competition, and the problems
to be solved focus not only on their roles as shopping
places, but also as "active and flourishing places"
and "bases of exchange and communication".
The business spheres have expanded, largely due to the
increased internationalization and the extension of
the highway into Oita. As measures to aid in the expansion,
the "Foreign Access Zone Fasilities" (at Oita
Port Ozai Area) and "Large Distribution Industrial
Area" (at Sano area in Eastern Oita City) were
established. |
