The Beppu Argerich's
Music Festival has been held in Beppu annually since
2000, and is supported by a large number of volunteers.
The world-famous pianist Martha Argerich, who rarely
gives recitals, is the General Director of the Music
Festival. The festival takes place over 10 days and
welcomes music lovers from all over the world.
Argerich's performances, concerts by top musicians from
Europe, Asia and Japan, exchange parties with performers,
workshops for young musicians and others are held during
the festival. All participants will be deeply immersed
in a musical atmosphere at the festival.
In Yufuin, located beyond the mountains of Beppu, the
Yufuin Film Festival has become an annual event. The
festival is held late in movie August in this town where
there is no theater. Films are handpicked along themes
that change every year. People from the prefecture and
the country are fascinated by events such as parties
with the director and cast of movies. The Annual Music
Festival is held in Taketa to commemorate TAKI Rentaro
who is famed for Kojo-no Tsuki (The Moon over the Ruined
Castle). |

Revitalization through Exchange |
|
 |
Oita is enthusiastic about plays and the theatre. "TSUKA Kouhei's Gekidan (troupe)" was launched by TSUKA Kouhei, a play-writer and producer of nationwide reputation, in order to foster high-quality arts in local areas. Staff got together, trained and performed in Oita, and expanded their activities into performing in Tokyo and Seoul, receiving good reviews along the way. The troupe disbanded in 2001, yet the spirit of exchange born through the theatre is still very much alive.
The Oita Asia Sculpture Exhibition is also widely acclaimed
among up-and-coming young sculptors. Sculptural works
displayed in ASAKURA Fumio Memorial Park come from all
parts of Asia and Japan and help to create a harmonious
atmosphere with the rich nat-ural environment in Oita.
Oita's culture and arts are rooted in the region. Oita
is a leader in cultural exchanges within and out of
Japan and is constantly developing. The new is constantly
being created while the old is preserved. |
