Experience Oita Yourself
Mr. German Espinoza Orozzo from Ecuador is a 3rd year student of APU. Although he has lived in Beppu for the past 3 years, this is the first time for him to visit Usuki City. This time we are going to introduce his "USUKI Report".

"Feel the Old Japan, NIOZA-NO-MICHI"
What on earth is written here? It's so difficult ...
You can see the whole city of Usuki! The tiled roofs are really lovely.
German experiences Usuki
Hello, this is German. It's the first time for me to visit Usuki though I have been in Oita for 3 years. The Japanese word "JO-KAMACHI" is also the first time for me to know. It is said that it is a town which developed around a castle in which a feudal lord lived. Here in JO-KAMACHI I became more conscious of the beauty of Japan because the town is full of tiled roofs, white walls and stone pavement routes. Since I am keen on Japanese culture and history, I am fascinated by the charms of Usuki City. Especially that "NIOZA-REKISI-NO-MICHII" was so quiet, I was feeling very happy just walking alone there. I was also impressed by the people in Usuki since they seem to know the value of their city's heritage and look after the old Japanese buildings and castle really well.
NIOZA has many winding slope. It's fun to take a look at the houses on both sides.
I consume the dish after first enjoying its beauty.
Experience of Vegetarian Diet
Someone told me that there is a good restaurant serving vegetarian food managed by a priest at the Buddhist temple in NIOZA. So I was excited to visit there. The "SEI-GETSU-AN" welcomed us to a Japanese style room which had a nice view of the Japanese garden. The finely decorated seasonal dishes were served one by one, which impressed me a lot. It was a great time for me to experience the Japanese spirit shown in this vegetarian meal.
"SHOKADO-BENTO" is as colorful as flowers.
USUKI GION FESTIVAL
ARIGATO for letting me take part in such a great festival.
"Usuki Gion Festival" was held at the time when I visited. It's one of the three large festivals in Oita. After the quiet parade passed by, the carnival (festival) began. Every child and grown-up joins in pulling the big "DASHI (float)" while cheering. I joined them and bent down to pass under the bottom of the "MIKOSHI (portable shrine)". It is said that when you do this you will have good health throughout the coming year. I enjoyed the day with the energetic people of USUKI.
The ice cream cones are delicious!
