The Japanese Swimming Stroke called "YAMAUCHI-RYU"
04
One of the highlights is "OOHATA-FURI." It is a very difficult task to wave a big flag above the surface of the water.
"YAMAUCHI-RYU" is registered as a cultural asset and is recognized as one of the 12 sects of the Japan Amateur Swimming Federation J.A.S.F.
Interesting Japanese way of swimming, handed down for 183 years!
My dear Usuki has various traditions. Especially the " Yamauchi swimming convention" is a famous traditional cultural event in Usuki. Since it has a 183 year history, it looks very old-fashioned and Japanesque. I suppose this unique tradition was developed and stayed here unchanged in Usuki since this old castle town was so isolated by the sea which surrounds it. Every year from the 21st of July for 20 days, the Yamauchi-style swimming centre is opened at Keirei Beach "Keireiga-hama" near my house. Many kids and grown-ups learn swimming according to their level. This swimming style that you can see in this convention spread all over Usuki after Mr. Yamanouchi Kyuma Katsushige from Shikoku taught Mr. Inagawa Seiki in Usuki. Some of the prominent differences from other ways of swimming are: swimming while holding an object, swimming sideways or in a standing position. Participants perform various techniques like flag waving "OOHATA-FURI”, archery performance "KYU-JYUTSU”; and practicing calligraphy "SUI-SHO" while swimming. This is now registered as a one of the 12 official styles in Japanese swimming sects authorized by the Japan Amateur Swimming Federation J.A.S.F. "GORAN-MAE" is performed at the beginning of the swimming convention which is held on the 10th of August every year. This old custom consists of participants showing off their swimming skills in front of someone who represents a feudal lord, still remains to this day. From beginner children to teachers, they all demonstrate their swimming performances. Many times I go there to see their performance with my children and each time I am moved. I would like more people to come and see these wonderful parts of Usuki culture.
The swimming convention of "YAMAUCHI-RYU" begins from the Suijin Festival "SUIJIN MATSURI"
Everyone from complete beginner children to teachers who have graduated to an advanced level, all demonstrate together to give a magnificent performance.
Mr. Yujiro Kani, the chief of the Festival was a former head of the swimming centre. He now acts an Adviser.
