| Producers from
within Oita Prefecture reported
to the governor their 8th consecutive
and 40th overall reception of the
top group award at the 54th Annual
All Japan Dried Shiitake Show.
Kusuo Ono and Shinobu Kudo, who
both received exceptional marks
individually and as part of Shiitake
Agricultural Cooperatives that
won group awards, received words
of praise from the prefecture. “You
have made Oita Prefectures dried
Shiitake’s a product of unwavering
repute. I expect you to keep Oita’s
reputation unmoving even more in
the future,” said the Governor. |

Embassy in Japan (July
14th) |

| To promote exchange
between Singapore and Oita, Ambassador
Tan Chin Tiong, from the Republic
of Singapore Embassy in Japan,
paid the governor a courtesy
visit. The Governor replied, “I
would like to continue our cooperation
and deepen the connection between
us.” |

of Germany visits
from Osaka and Kobe (July 21st) |

| Dr. Gerold Amelung
from the Consulate General of
the Federal Republic of Germany
in Osaka and Kobe paid a courtesy
visit to the governor as he was
also attending a lecture conference
on Oita and Germany’s cooperation
and international exchange, as
well as visiting Taketa City
and Naori due to their sister-city
exchange activities with Germany.
The Governor said, “International
exchange in various fields is
spreading, starting with Taketa
City. Let’s continue to
deepen the level of cooperation
and exchange between us.” |

Annual “Oita Prefecture
Young Boys Boat” Sets
Sail (July 25th) |

| The 27th Annual “Oita
Prefecture Young Boys Boat” spent
four days from July 25th to July
29th sailing to Okinawa. Honorary
Captain, Governor Hirose, discussed
with the young staff junior-high
and high-school students about “Oita’s
Future,” and with the elementary
school group about “Thankfulness.” The
crew members learned the importance
of taking on the responsibilities
of the cultural heritage site,
Shurijo Castle, the value of
peace at the Himeyuri Peace Museum
and Oita’s own tower there. |

Paralympic Winner Reports to
the Governor (July 27th) |

| Ms. Aimi Kodama
reported to the governor her
account of winning 1st place
in both the 50-meter freestyle
and 100-meter backstroke at the
2006 Japan Paralympic International
Swimming Competition. The governor
complimented her, saying, “Your
wonderful medal energizes even
the people around you. Good luck
with your future activities.” |

Formula Nippon Race Starts
(August 6th) |

| The most competitive
car race in the country, “The
5th All Japan Formula Nippon
Championship,” was held
at the Auto Polis circuit in
Kamitsue Town of Hita City. This
was the first instance of the
race being held in Kyushu. The
governor declared with a high
voice the start of the final
race. |

Kyushu, Ground-breaking Ceremony
held at Oita Technology Center
(August 10th) |

| The Oita Technology
Center(kunisaki city), the center
of development and production
of leading-edge semi-conductor
packages, conducted its ground-breaking
ceremony as it commences to build
semi-conductors used in such
products as game stations and
cellular phones. “I have
great expectations that this
will benefit the development
of the Oita LSI Cluster project,” said
the governor. |

| Celebration
Ceremony of Fujio Mitarai’s Start as Nippon
Keidanren’s Chairman (August
13th) |
 |
| Approximately
1,800 prefectural residents gathered
in an Oita City hotel to celebrate
Fujio Mitarai’s assumption
of the chairman position of Nippon
Keidanren. The celebration was
cosponsored by the prefecture
and Saiki City. The governor
said, “The new chairman
of Keidanren is the so-called “Financial
Prime Minister,” leader
of industry. I would like you
to lead as you see fit in this
difficult time of Japan’s
declining birth rate and aging
citizens and the growing development
of neighboring countries.” Chairman
Mitarai gave a commemorative
speech titled, “Japan’s
Innovation and the Decentralization
of Authority.” |

Maxim E Barkhin came
to Oita Prefecture to teach at
the Oita Prefecture Residents
Art and Culture Festival’s
event, “Oita-Russia Friendly
Exchange Public Ballet Performance
:La Bayadere.” They paid
a courtesy visit to governor
Hirose, who stated, “I
would like to thank you deeply
for allowing Oita’s children
to learn ballet under such remarkable
instructors such as yourselves.” |
